The 2016 theme for National Nutrition Month is "Savor the Flavor of Eating Right." Our Lake of the Ozarks medical spa understands the importance of eating right for both health and beauty reasons. This year's theme enforces the fact that eating healthy foods can be delicious and enjoyable. The following 12 foods & beverages are amazing for giving you healthy-looking skin, and in our opinion, they're pretty tasty.
Tuna
Omega-3 fatty acids in tuna and other oily fish help to protect your skin and keep it moist by maintaining the cell membranes. It is also a good source of biotin, which is a B vitamin that metabolizes amino acids which aid your complexion by preventing scaly skin.
Almonds
These nuts are packed with vitamin E and are wonderful for maintaining healthy skin by protecting it from sun damage and combating the signs of aging.
The high water content in oranges keeps your skin hydrated, and the high amount of vitamin C protects your body cells from free radical damage. It also creates collagen which holds your skin, bones, and tissues together.
Grapefruit
This is another vitamin C-rich food that is also rich in lycopene, a chemical that helps protect skin from UV rays and keeps it smooth.
Broccoli
The vitamin C in broccoli works to manage collagen production, the B-vitamins help to reduce dry, flaky patches of skin, and the vitamin A and other antioxidants in this vegetable keep your skin healthy and may reduce the appearance of scars.
Carrots
Lycopene protects skin from the harsh rays of the sun, and the other nutrients in carrots nourish your skin, give it a healthy glow, and help to fight wrinkles.
Kale
The elasticity and firmness of your skin is improved by the beta carotene and lutein found in kale. It also another food that provides your body with large amounts of vitamin C.
Spinach
Spinach is filled with phytochemicals & folates that hydrate your skin, and it's also packed with vitamin A, which is a skin-strengthener. It is filled with vitamin C and antioxidants that fend off skin infections. The iron in spinach can help to fight anemia and add color to pale skin.
Avocado
The monounsaturated fats in avocados are wonderful for locking moisture into your skin, and they are full of vitamins C and E.
Sweet Potatoes
These, along with many other deeply-colored fruits and vegetables, are rich in vitamin A and have been found to enhance the appearance and color of your skin.
Green Tea
These last two are technically beverages rather than foods, but excellent things to ingest to keep your skin looking its healthiest. Green tea is full of antioxidants that can eliminate free radicals and prevent flaky skin, plus it is great for reducing fine lines.
Water
Last but not least, probably the most important thing that you can do for both your skin and your body - drink lots of water! It flushes the toxins out of your body, and staying hydrated keeps skin cells pumped which helps it to look young and firm.
All of those foods work wonderfully in recipes, and most of them are incredible snacks on their own. Serenity Medical Spa suggest using National Nutrition Month to motivate yourself into eating healthier. Our Lake of the Ozarks medical spa can offer you a lot of options for maintaining your beautiful skin, but eating healthy is something that you can do on your own every single day to aid the process.
