DEEP TISSUE

Deep tissue massage is designed to relieve severe tension in muscles and connective tissue or fascia, treating the deeper muscles of the body. It relieves constant pain due to heavy physical activity or injury. It is often quite intense as a result of deep specific work and generally done in a series of treatments.

SWEDISH MASSAGE

One of the primary goals of the Swedish massage technique is to relax the entire body. This is accomplished by rubbing the muscles with long gliding strokes in the direction of blood returning to the heart. But Swedish massage therapy goes beyond relaxation. Swedish massage is exceptionally beneficial for increasing the level of oxygen in the blood, decreasing muscle toxins, and improving circulation and flexibility while easing tension.

THAI MASSAGE

Traditional Thai Massage uses no oils or lotions, and rather than rubbing the muscles, the body is compressed, stretched, pulled and rocked. The recipient of the massage wears loose, comfortable clothing and lies on a mat on the floor. The receiver will be positioned in a variety of yoga-like positions during the course of the massage. There is a standard procedure and rhythm to the massage, which the therapist will adjust to fit each individual client.

PRE-NATAL MASSAGE

Pre-natal massage is a great way to aid your body through the stresses of pregnancy. Receiving regular massages throughout your pregnancy helps eliminate fluid retention, stress on the lower back and feet, and provides an overall sense of wellbeing. HERBOLOGY DETOX BODY WRAP

The Herbology Detox Body Wrap is performed for exfoliation and detoxification of the skin. Cupping is used in conjunction with deep tissue massage. Cupping is a method in which suction

Prenatal Spa Treatments at Serenity Medical Spa

Serenity Medical Spa is all about pampering our clients and making an enjoyable, relaxing experience for them. Relaxing and letting stress leave your body is especially important for expecting mothers. At our medical spa at the Lake of the Ozarks, we offer a special line of services specifically customized to benefit expecting mothers. Pregnancy can be a very stressful time for soon-to-be mothers since their lives are about to significantly change. Taking time to unwind before the baby makes its debut can be helpful by reducing anxiety and promoting overall health.

Prenatal Massage-

Similar to a traditional massage, a prenatal massage is beneficial for reducing stress. The special cushions used during the massage allows a pregnant woman to lay on her stomach to enjoy the pampering. Pregnancy can be hard on the body, and a prenatal massage is a great method to aid some of those aches and pains you may experience. A prenatal massage helps prevent water retention and swelling of the body. It can also alleviate some of the back pains caused by carrying around the extra weight during pregnancy.

Manicure/Pedicure-

During a manicure you can sit back and be pampered. We will soak and massage your hands and arms to promote relaxation. 8 Tips For Preventing Varicose Veins

Genetics obviously play a huge role in our physical characteristics, but they are not the only factor. Our lifestyle and dietary habits are have enormous influence over how we look (and feel) physically. At Serenity Medical Spa, we have made it our mission to help our clients be their most beautiful selves. This week, we're taking a closer look at one of the issues we work with the most frequently: varicose veins.

What Causes Varicose Veins?

Varicose veins are a result of a malfunction in the circulatory system. This system is designed such that arteries carry oxygen-rich blood to the outer extremities of the body, and then veins transport the deoxygenated blood back to the heart and lungs so it can be replenished. Valves in the veins (assisted by muscles in the body) control this movement and ensure the blood is flowing in the right direction. Over time, however, these valves can weaken and give way. This may lead to blood pooling in the veins, causing them to stretch, leak, and bulge. This inward damage to the vein causes the surface marks known as varicose or spider veins (spider veins are closer to the surface).

Though undesirable, most varicose veins do not pose any significant health risks. In extreme cases, however, the veins may swell so much that they rupture, which can lead to open sores on the skin.

Tips For Preventing Varicose Veins

Genetics have a large role to play in the formation of varicose veins; if your mother or father had them, you may be more likely to develop them as you age. However, there are a few things you can do to help prevent the formation of varicose veins and/or help prevent the ones you have from getting worse. Most of the recommended tips have to do with improving circulation and muscle tone in your legs and thighs, as these are some of the most common places varicose and spider veins appear.

Avoid crossing your legs when sitting, as this can cut off circulation.
When laying down, elevate your legs so that they are above your heart.
Avoid wearing tight clothes that may inhibit circulation around your legs, upper thighs, and waist.
Exercise to improve the muscle tone in your legs (walking, running, squats, swimming, biking etc).
Avoid standing or sitting for extended period of times without breaks in between.
Try to lose weight if necessary. Being overweight can put added pressure on your veins.
Avoid wearing high heels excessively. Walking in flat shoes works the calf muscles more, which will help improve muscle tone.
Wear support stockings if recommended by your doctor.

Treatment Options For Varicose Veins

While these suggestions may decrease your chances of developing spider or varicose veins, there is no way to guarantee results. Women are often more likely to develop varicose veins than men, predominantly due to the many hormonal changes women undergo throughout their lives as a result of puberty, hormonal birth control methods, pregnancy, and menopause. However, men can suffer from varicose veins as well. If you do develop varicose veins as you age, there are some treatment options available to you. At our medical spa in Lake Ozark MO, we recommend a procedure called Sclerotherapy® to treat uncomplicated spider veins and uncomplicated small varicose veins (veins measuring less than 3 mm in diameter). Specifically, we offer Asclera® injections to help treat varicose veins. Here is a description of how this procedure works. (Summary pulled from Asclera.com.)

Asclera® is a sclerosing agent that is injected into the vein. It works by damaging the endothelium, the cells lining the inside of blood vessels. This causes blood platelets and cellular debris to attach to the lining of the vessels; eventually, cellular debris and platelets cause the blood vessel to clot. Over time, the clotted vein will be replaced with tissue.

Acne Prevention & Treatment Tips

Acne - the bane of every beauty-conscious individual's existence. Depending on the individual, acne can range from a few annoying spots to countless blemishes that cover the entire face, upper back, and more. Acne is caused by a variety of different reasons, and the treatment process looks different for every individual. This week, Serenity Medical Spa is here to help you get a better understanding of how acne works and what steps you can take to eliminate it.

What Is Acne?

Acne are red blemishes that most commonly appear on the face, but can also be found on the neck, shoulders, back, and upper arms. Pimples, blackheads, whiteheads, and other miscellaneous red bumps are all examples of acne. Acne is formed when the skin's sebaceous (oil) glands release greasy excretions that clog pores (the small openings for hair follicles). Depending on the size of the plugged pore, it can turn into a whitehead or a blackhead. Some of the clogged pores can swell or become inflamed, at which point they evolve into deeper lumps or nodules. Nodules, which are firm swellings below the surface of the skin, are often associated with extreme cases of acne (called "cystic acne").

Who Is Most Susceptible To Acne?

Acne most commonly appears among teenagers, typically beginning in preteens ages 10-13. Acne is usually worse for people with predominantly oily skin. Male adolescents tend to experience acne more than teenage girls, as increased testosterone levels trigger the body to produce more sebum (the oil from the skin's oil glands). Teenage acne usually fades once the individual enters their early 20s; however, it is not uncommon for women ages 30 and older to continue to experience mild to moderate forms of acne.

What Causes Acne?

No one knows exactly what causes acne, but here are a few of the things that frequently correlate with acne outbreaks:

Changing hormone levels
Oily skin
Hormonal contraceptives
Greasy or oily makeup
Bacteria growing in clogged pores
Genetic disposition (if your parents had acne, you may be more likely to get it)

Existing acne can also be worsened by several different things, including:

High humidity
Rough scrubbing of the skin
Picking at, squeezing, or otherwise messing with pimples
Fluctuating hormone levels (such as just before a women's menstrual cycle begins)

Avoiding these things whenever possible may be able to help keep your acne in check.

How Can Acne Be Treated?

"Spring Into Beauty" Open House Recap

It seemed as though everyone at the lake was able to join us at Serenity Medical Spa as we "sprung" into beauty on Wednesday, March 23rd! With over 100 guests present, we were able to have a fabulous party. Many clients took advantage of the "Bring a Friend" promotion, leaving them with free $50 gift cards. Guests were also able to take advantage of savings on their favorite Merz injectables: Xeomin, Radiesse, and Belotero.

Lisa Mollerus catered the party with marvelous cupcakes and fun flavored shots for everyone to enjoy. With expert information and incentives provided by Merz Representative, Rachel Saffold, and the entire Serenity crew at your fingertips, it was an event no one wanted to miss. While these wonderful hostesses encouraged many attendees, there was one incentive guests could not pass up: free consultation with Dr. Debra Atkinson.
