How To Avoid Halloween Makeup Skin Hazards

Thick, colorful Halloween makeup looks incredible with a costume, but if you don't do it right, your skin may not look so incredible the next day.  The best medical spa at the Lake of the Ozarks has a few tips for you to make sure that you don't end up with scary skin after the holiday.  Follow these guidelines and you should be able to do to the fancy makeup job without ruining your complexion.

Clean & moisturize your skin before applying makeup.

Do not steam or exfoliate your skin right before using a costume makeup.  That will open your pores, allowing the makeup to get in, block them, and cause blemishes.  Simply use your regular daily facial cleanser and moisturizer.  Save the exfoliation for after Halloween.

Look for quality, not a bargain.

Much of the cheap Halloween makeup that appears at the local drug store with the costumes every season is not noncomedogenic, meaning it will clog up your pores.  Saving a few dollars is not worth the damage that it can cause to your skin.  Stage or theatrical makeup made specifically to be used for costume use will contain FDA approved ingredients that are a lot easier on your pores.

Test a small patch of skin before you dress up.

You don't want to be surprised with an allergic reaction after covering your entire face with a product.  If you have never used it before, test a little bit on a small patch of hidden skin.  After washing it off, keep an eye on it for a day in case of any delayed reaction.  If you are using last year's makeup, check the expiration date.  If there isn't one, be wary of any makeup that has an unpleasant odor or if it doesn't look or feel the way it did when you first bought it.

Skip the fake lashes.

They are usually very difficult to put on and often end up in your eye instead of on your lid.  Cheap glue and the ever-present glitter that go with many Halloween fake lashes can really do a number on your eyes, too.  If you have your heart set on long, gorgeous lashes, a better solution is to choose our NovaLash Eyelash Extensions.

Don't put it on any earlier than you absolutely have to.

The longer your skin is exposed to a thick makeup, the longer it has to soak it up. Block your pores as little as possible, and take it off as soon as you can.

Do NOT go to sleep without washing it off.

One of the absolute worst things that you can do is to go to sleep with regular, everyday makeup on, and Halloween makeup is 100 times worse!  No matter how tired you are or how late you get in, wash your face!  It will be well worth the few minutes of lost sleep to keep your skin fresh.

Visit us for a luxurious facial.

After Halloween is over and you've scrubbed away the remnants of whatever character you decided to be for a day, it's the perfect time to have a facial.  Our HydraFacials are excellent for cleansing, exfoliating, and hydrating your skin. You can set up your appointment today and know that you have that to look forward to after all of the excitement.

Even if you choose to wear a mask instead of makeup, keep a close watch on your skin.  If the mask is made from a thick rubber or it's very tight-fitting, sweat and dirt will clog your pores just as easily.  And don't forget about all of those treats!  The extra candy and desserts that are enjoyed over this particular holiday can do a number on your skin too.  Drinking lots of water will help tremendously, plus it's a great habit to have on a daily basis.

We aren't saying to skip the Halloween makeup.  Design away!  Just make sure that you take the proper steps so that your skin is as beautiful after the holiday as it was before.  The best medical spa at the Lake of the Ozarks is here to help you both before and after.  Have a fun, festive, and safe Halloween weekend from all of us here at Serenity Medical Spa!

Our Featured Medical Spa Treatments For Men

The best medical spa at the Lake of the Ozarks is very popular with the ladies in town, but the fellas need to know that we have a lot to offer them, too!  All of the services that we provide at Serenity Medical Spa for women are also excellent for gentlemen.  (Except, of course, for bikini waxing.  Don't ask us to do that!)

In this day and age, it is completely acceptable for men to enjoy the offerings available at a spa.  We have never had any men leave unhappy.  Instead, they are relaxed, rejuvenated, and feel really great about themselves.

It's also a great couple's activity.  Any girl would be thrilled to be treated to a date night of pampering and beauty.  Last week we talked about bridal beauty at Serenity Medical Spa.  The groom and all of his groomsmen need to look good in those wedding photos too!

Here is a small portion of the services that many men might be interested in.

Gentleman’s Grooming Facial

Eyebrows are trimmed and waxing is done where needed such as ears, nose, and eyebrows. The gentleman’s facial begins with a deep cleansing to remove impurities followed by extractions. The skin is then treated with a customizable mask that promotes anti-aging. Your face is left feeling detoxified and hydrated.

Thai Massage

All of our massages are amazing, but this is a really great one for the golfers. Traditional Thai Massage uses no oils or lotions, and rather than rubbing the muscles, the body is compressed, stretched, pulled and rocked. The recipient of the massage wears loose, comfortable clothing and lies on a mat on the floor. The receiver will be positioned in a variety of yoga-like positions during the course of the massage. There is a standard procedure and rhythm to the massage, which the therapist will adjust to fit each individual client.

Ear Candling

A safe, simple, non-invasive, naturally relaxing cleansing method that uses long, hollow ear candles to extract earwax and other debris from the ear canal. The proponents of this method say that Ear Candling improves mental clarity and balances fluids that may cause headaches.

Botox®

Botox® treatments can give the face a younger, less stressed appearance by relaxing the facial expression muscles, resulting in smoother skin and fewer wrinkles. Botox is used on lines between the eyes, the forehead, crow’s feet, and other regions where facial expression muscles can cause lines of movement. Reduction of frontal headaches is often an additional benefit for clients.

Cryotherapy

Removal of warts, skin tags, or scaly brown spots on the face or body can be obtained with freezing these growths with a cryogenic gas mixture.

Skin Cancer Screening

Sun exposure causes premature aging of the skin and can lead to development of precancerous and cancerous skin lesions, depending on genetic makeup of your skin, family history, and frequency of sunburns as a child. Most people should start with yearly skin checks by the late 20’s. Skin checks and appropriate management of lesions are available at Serenity Medical Spa.

Our Lake of the Ozarks medical spa has a large menu of spa services to relax your body and polish your look.  Our Physician Services and Medical Skincare options can reduce wrinkles, aid with the effects of sun damage, and remove that unwanted hair.  Stop thinking that we are a place just for the girls.  Tell all of the men that you know that we can't wait to see them here at Serenity Medical Spa.

There are so many details to take care of and so many people to deal with, it can become overwhelming very quickly.  It's very important that the bride and groom don't lose touch with each other during this process.  Every once in a while you should both step away from everything "wedding" and take a much deserved break.

For the girls...
We have lots of facials for the ladies to choose from.  You and your bridesmaids can make a whole afternoon of it if you like, and don't forget the mothers of the bride and groom too.  Our skincare products allow you to continue pampering your skin after you go home.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month - A Little Knowledge Can Save a Life

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.  Our Lake of the Ozarks medical spa realizes that this is a very important topic, so we are using today's blog to educate everyone and raise some awareness.  The more you know now, the better your chances will be of catching it early if the signs are there.

Facts:

  • All women are at risk for breast cancer.
  • 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer.
  • Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women, and the 2nd leading cause of death among women.
  • It can happen to men too, but it is rare.  A little over 400 men die of breast cancer each year, compared to over 40,000 women yearly.

As frightening as those statistics are, there is some hopeful news.  For the past 25 years, the deaths caused by breast cancer have declined.  This is due greatly to the increased awareness.  Early detection can save your life, and if you are diagnosed, treatments continue to get better and better every year.

Risk Factors

There are many things that qualify a person as "at risk."  Some can be controlled, but there are a lot of factors that are genetic.  Risks to keep an eye on are:
  • Women over the age of 55
  • A family history of beast or ovarian cancer.  Your risk increases if they were diagnosed before the age of 50.
  • Your menstruation began before age 12, or menopause started after 55.
  • You have never had a baby, or you had your first child later in life.
  • You have dense breast tissue, making it difficult to detect lumps.
  • You previously had breast cancer in one breast.
  • Obesity
  • Radiation therapy to the chest before the age of 30
  • Combined Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT)

Don't immediately get worried if you fall under any of these categories.  Only 30%-40% of the people that are diagnosed with breast cancer have these factors.  They don't mean that you will get it, and the don't mean you are immediately safe if none pertain to you.  They are just factors to look out for to defend yourself.

Warning Signs:

Not all women will have the same warning signs.  If you notice one or more of the following, it is wise to have your doctor take a look.  It is always better to be safe than sorry.
  • A lump or hard knot inside the breast or underarm area.
  • A pain in your breast that does not go away.
  • The size or shape of your breast is noticeably different.
  • Your breast is swollen, red, or darker than usual.
  • The skin is puckered or dimpled.
  • Nipple discharge that starts suddenly.
  • Your nipples are itchy, scaly, or sore.

Prevention:

Some of the behaviors that also put you at risk can be controlled, and sometimes avoided completely.  A few things that you can do to reduce your risks are also great, healthy advice for everyday life.

  • Exercise!  Stay active.
  • Eat a diet low in saturated fat and full of fruits and vegetables.
  • Limit alcohol consumption.

October 16 is World Mammography Day
.  The American Cancer Society suggests that all women have a yearly mammogram beginning at the age of 40. Between the ages of 20-30, women should get a clinical breast exam with their regular checkups.

No part of this blog is meant to frighten anyone.  It is simply factual information that everyone should be aware.  Every women should do a self-check on herself for lumps monthly.  The more familiar you are with your own body, the easier it will be to notice any changes.

Serenity Medical Spa wants to make sure that all of our wonderful customers are healthy and happy.  Hopefully you learned something helpful from this blog. Share it with the people you love to raise their awareness too.
