Shower Tips for Ultimate Beauty

Taking a shower seems like a no-brainer.  After all, you've been doing it nearly your entire life. Believe it or not, you may not have been doing it in the best way possible all of these years! Lathering up and rinsing off is the main purpose of any shower, but if you follow these simple tips from Serenity Medical Spa from now on, you will begin noticing a big difference in your skin and hair.

Brush your hair.

The simple act of running a brush through your hair before you get into the shower will distribute the natural oils from your scalp throughout your hair, which helps to condition and balance it. Going into the shower with your hair already untangled will make it a little easier to comb afterwards and breakage will be less likely.

Keep it short.

The longer you are in the water, the dryer your skin can become.  Ideally you should aim for about 10 minutes, but try your best to never go longer than 15 minutes.

Don't make it hot.

Hot water feels awesome on a cold day, but it can quickly dry out your skin. Cooler water has actually been discovered to have benefits, like improving circulation, boosting immunity, and even boosting your mood.  Washing in warm water and then finishing with a cold rinse can even make your skin and hair softer and shinier.

Wash your face last.

You shouldn't just start at the top and work your way down, or vice versa.  Begin by shampooing your hair.  Next, pull your hair back like you are making a ponytail and only condition the lower half of it.  Rinse that out well, then proceed to wash your body with a moisturizing soap or body wash.  If necessary, exfoliate your legs before shaving them next.  Save washing your face for the very last. The steam from the shower will open your pores for a cleaner wash, plus all of the conditioner, which isn't great on your face, will be long gone.

Shave right.

The reason for shaving your legs toward the end of the shower is because the steam is not only great for you face, but it also softens the hairs on your legs, making them easier to tackle.  This will help to avoid razor burn and ingrown hairs.  Another great tip is to shave with body oil.  It keeps your legs soft and it's also good for helping your razor to last longer.  If you don't want to worry about this step at all, Serenity Medical Spa's professional waxing and sugaring services can take care of it for you!

Pat dry.

Be gentle with the skin that you are in and always pat yourself dry with a towel. Never rub.

Moisturize immediately.

If you are a lotion person, put it on right after you dry off.  Another option is to apply body oils while you are still in the shower.  This locks the moisture in your skin, where you want it to stay.

There you have it.  Nothing on this list is difficult to do.  You just need to retrain your brain until it becomes your natural routine.  The best medical spa at the Lake of the Ozarks offers lots of products that can be used during your shower, after it, and on a daily basis to help you achieve the healthiest and most beautiful skin possible.  We would love to sit down with you the next time that you visit Serenity Medical Spa and talk to you about all of your options.

7 Cold Weather Skincare Tips

The cold weather has made its way to our portion of Mid-Missouri, and it brings along with it a new set of possible problems for you skin.  The best medical spa at the Lake of the Ozarks is here to help you head these off before they affect your beautiful skin, but there are a few things that you can do on your own to keep your skin looking and feeling its best.

#1 - Moisturize more.

You should moisturize year-round, but each season may call for moisturizers that are a bit different.  Serenity Medical Spa can help you figure out what your particular skin is craving due to the dryer, colder weather.  Be sure to moisturize your hands every single time that you wash them this time of year.  Your feet will need a little extra TLC to keep them smooth and soft, and don't forget those lips. It's difficult to keep them covered up and out of the wind, so always have a moisturizing lip treatment close at hand.

#2 - Don't forget the sunscreen.

Summer isn't the only season that you need to protect your skin from the sun. It's just as strong in the winter, so don't forget this important step before heading outdoors.

#3 - Exfoliate

This is important for keeping you skin fresh.  It will remove the dead layer of skin from the surface.  This step will also help to keep your lips and hands from drying up and cracking.  A skin consultation at our Lake of the Ozarks medical spa will guide you in deciding the type that you need and how often you should be using it for the best results.

#4 - Turn on the humidifier.

Keeping your home warm also dries out the air, which dries out your skin.  A humidifier allows you to put moisture back into the air (and your skin) without sacrificing the cozy room temperature.

#5 - Keep you skin covered outdoors.

Your skin will stay both warm and protected when you make sure to keep it covered up when you go outside.  Gloves, hats, and scarves are great for keeping the cold wind off of your skin.  Try to avoid using irritating fabrics like wool, but if you do, put a thin cotton layer between that piece of clothing and your skin.

#6 - Keep showers warm and short.

Even though a nice, long, hot bath or shower sounds heavenly in the dead of winter, it's horrible for you skin.  Hot water will strip the natural oils from your skin.  Warm water instead of hot water is best, and try to keep your bathing time under 15 minutes.  The longer you are in there, the dryer your skin will be.  Also, always remember to pat your skin dry, don't rub it.

#7 - Get a personal skin consultation.

Every person's skin is different, and the skincare routine needed for it is unique. When you schedule your skin consultation at Serenity Medical Spa, our estheticians will analyze your skincare needs and provide you with a customized winter skincare plan.  We have a wide variety of SkinCeuticals® and SkinMedica® products that work wonderfully, as well as many services that work hand in hand with a good routine.

Even though you are lot more covered up in the winter than in the summer months, it's still important to take good care of the skin that's hidden under those sweaters and coats.  Call us soon and schedule your own personal skin consultation at the best medical spa at the Lake of the Ozarks.  We have the knowledge and experience to get you and your skin through whatever comes your way.  After all, beauty is our business!

How To Avoid Halloween Makeup Skin Hazards

Thick, colorful Halloween makeup looks incredible with a costume, but if you don't do it right, your skin may not look so incredible the next day.  The best medical spa at the Lake of the Ozarks has a few tips for you to make sure that you don't end up with scary skin after the holiday.  Follow these guidelines and you should be able to do to the fancy makeup job without ruining your complexion.

Clean & moisturize your skin before applying makeup.

Do not steam or exfoliate your skin right before using a costume makeup.  That will open your pores, allowing the makeup to get in, block them, and cause blemishes.  Simply use your regular daily facial cleanser and moisturizer.  Save the exfoliation for after Halloween.

Look for quality, not a bargain.

Much of the cheap Halloween makeup that appears at the local drug store with the costumes every season is not noncomedogenic, meaning it will clog up your pores.  Saving a few dollars is not worth the damage that it can cause to your skin.  Stage or theatrical makeup made specifically to be used for costume use will contain FDA approved ingredients that are a lot easier on your pores.

Test a small patch of skin before you dress up.

You don't want to be surprised with an allergic reaction after covering your entire face with a product.  If you have never used it before, test a little bit on a small patch of hidden skin.  After washing it off, keep an eye on it for a day in case of any delayed reaction.  If you are using last year's makeup, check the expiration date.  If there isn't one, be wary of any makeup that has an unpleasant odor or if it doesn't look or feel the way it did when you first bought it.

Skip the fake lashes.

They are usually very difficult to put on and often end up in your eye instead of on your lid.  Cheap glue and the ever-present glitter that go with many Halloween fake lashes can really do a number on your eyes, too.  If you have your heart set on long, gorgeous lashes, a better solution is to choose our NovaLash Eyelash Extensions.

Don't put it on any earlier than you absolutely have to.

The longer your skin is exposed to a thick makeup, the longer it has to soak it up. Block your pores as little as possible, and take it off as soon as you can.

Do NOT go to sleep without washing it off.

One of the absolute worst things that you can do is to go to sleep with regular, everyday makeup on, and Halloween makeup is 100 times worse!  No matter how tired you are or how late you get in, wash your face!  It will be well worth the few minutes of lost sleep to keep your skin fresh.

Visit us for a luxurious facial.

After Halloween is over and you've scrubbed away the remnants of whatever character you decided to be for a day, it's the perfect time to have a facial.  Our HydraFacials are excellent for cleansing, exfoliating, and hydrating your skin. You can set up your appointment today and know that you have that to look forward to after all of the excitement.

Even if you choose to wear a mask instead of makeup, keep a close watch on your skin.  If the mask is made from a thick rubber or it's very tight-fitting, sweat and dirt will clog your pores just as easily.  And don't forget about all of those treats!  The extra candy and desserts that are enjoyed over this particular holiday can do a number on your skin too.  Drinking lots of water will help tremendously, plus it's a great habit to have on a daily basis.

We aren't saying to skip the Halloween makeup.  Design away!  Just make sure that you take the proper steps so that your skin is as beautiful after the holiday as it was before.  The best medical spa at the Lake of the Ozarks is here to help you both before and after.  Have a fun, festive, and safe Halloween weekend from all of us here at Serenity Medical Spa!
