5 Tips to Keep Your Heart Healthy

February happens to be American Heart Month.  Beauty is important to us here at the best medical spa at the Lake of the Ozarks, but so is your health. It's hard to look or feel beautiful when you body isn't working properly.  Here are a few tips from Serenity Medical Spa to keep your heart working in tip-top shape.


1. Eat Healthy

A regular diet of certain foods can do a lot to keep your heart healthy. Those that are rich in omega 3's are wonderful for this.  Choose fruit or vegetables for a snack over chips or sweets.  Eat plenty of whole grains, walnuts, and almonds. Eat fish, like salmon or tuna, 1-2 times every week.  Limit your salt intake, and try to avoid saturated fats & added sugars.  The antioxidants in one glass of red wine are said to improve heart health, but more than that could pose other health risks, so drink in moderation.      

2. Exercise Regularly 

The American Heart Association suggests at least 150 minutes of moderate intensity exercise each week.  Look for opportunities to add more physical movement into your everyday routine.  Take the stairs instead of the elevator, ride your bike instead of taking the car, or park at the far end of a parking lot to get in a few extra steps.  Every little bit helps.    

3. Get Routine Checkups

A yearly visit to your doctor is the best way to become aware of possible heart problems and an excellent way to prevent them.  Between doctor visits, monitor your blood pressure.  Adults over age 20 should aim to keep their blood pressure under 120/80 mm Hg.  Also, keep your cholesterol levels below 200 mg/dL.  


4. Don't Smoke

Smoking greatly increases your risk for heart disease.  Kicking the habit can save your life, as well as those having to breathe your second-hand smoke. Quitting may be hard, but it is worth the struggle.    

5. Manage Stress  

Taking time every day to de-stress is another good way to keep a heart healthy. Getting plenty of sleep at night and taking a few minutes out of your day to sit quietly can help to manage stress levels.  Getting a massage can relax both your body and your mind.  Even something as simple as a mani-pedi appointment can lift your spirits and chase stress away.  Serenity Medical Spa is the perfect place to visit for a bit of stress management!
